Rapid Fabrication of Eco-Friendly Intrinsic Photothermal Hydrogel Evaporator for Efficient Solar-Driven Water Purification

Abstract
The field of solar vapor generation has developed rapidly during the past years, but achievement of the goals of high evaporation rate, eco-friendly and rapid preparation with low-cost raw materials is still a challenge. In this work, a type of intrinsic photothermal hydrogel evaporator using tannic acid-ferric ion (TA-Fe 3+ ) complexes as photothermal conversion materials and effective gelator for efficient interfacial solar-driven water purification is reported. A facile method by blending eco-friendly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), agarose, Fe 3+ and TA together was proposed. The results show that TA-Fe 3+ complex has excellent photothermal conversion performance and strong gelatinization ability, enabling the hydrogel with excellent evaporation performance, mouldability and stability. A high rate of 1.875 kg·m -2 ·h -1 corresponding to an energy efficiency of 85.7% under 1 sun irradiation is achieved. What’s more, the hydrogel evaporator exhibits high stability in longtime and cyclic test without evaporation performance declining. The outdoor test results confirm the hydrogel evaporator can realize sewage treatment and desalination efficiently and remain high evaporation rate. The proposed intrinsic photothermal hydrogel provides a new preparation pathway for highly efficient interfacial hydrogel evaporator that possess the advantages of easy preparation, eco-friendly and low-cost.
