•Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) is closely related to photosynthesis.•The physiologicalinformation in PSII photochemical yield (ΦPSII) is disturbed by illumination.•The R2 values of the diurnal ΦPSII-PAR regression decrease under drought stress.•The linearity of the diurnal ΦPSII-PAR regression can serve as a good indicator of drought stress.
