On the mechanical alloying of novel austenitic dual-precipitation strengthened steels

•A novel 2-step mechanical alloying process was introduced for highly ductile materials.•Different powder particle sizes have a significant impact on the chemical composition measurements.•Oxide and nitrides showing an average diameter of 3 and 37 nm, respectively.•A novel method to determine the optimal milling duration was established.
