Abstract
The efficacy of selected foliar insecticides for the control of potato leafhoppers were tested near Ames, IA. Plots measuring 40 × 70 ft were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Treatments were applied on Jul 27 when the crop was in the early bud stage and approximately 12 inches tall. All treatments were applied using a CO2 propelled, 10-ft boom sprayer fitted with Tee Jet 8004 LP flat fan nozzles centered on 20 inches, and mounted on a Honda 100 ATV. All treatments were applied at a pressure of 12 psi and a rate of 10 gal/acre. Weather conditions at the time of treatment were clear with a 2-5 mph breeze from the southwest. The temperature ranged from 74-80°F, and the ca. RH 60%. Leafhopper numbers were sampled immediately prior to and 1, 5, and 10 days after treatment. Samples were taken by making 10 pendulum sweeps along the longitudinal axis of each plot. No phototoxicity was observed.
