Volume versus value of crop-related water footprints and virtual water flows: A case study for the Yellow River Basin

•Values of green water used in crop production are estimated accounting for costs.•Values of crop-related blue and green virtual water flows are compared.•Visible trade-offs between volume and value of water for crop production are observed.•Regional values of water are more sensitive than volume of water to future changes.
