•The YRB was overall in dry condition but showed a wetting trend.•The multi-scale SPEI and GOSIF were mainly positively correlated.•The promptest response to drought was cropland followed by grassland and forest.•GOSIF has great potential for monitoring the response of vegetation to drought.
