Subtypes in Addiction and Their Neurobehavioral Impairments in Approach Behavior, Negative Emotionality and Executive Function

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) has been linked to impairments in three broad functional domains: approach-related behavior, negative emotionality, and executive function. We hypothesize that these impairments are at least partially independent, such that we can define at least three distinct subtypes in those with SUD: a “reward type” with deviant approach-related behavior, “relief type” with high negative emotionality, and “low functioning type” with impaired executive function.
