•Water vapor pressure and soil heat flux are the main drivers of C. camphora transpiration.•Air temperature and soil temperature are the main drivers of C. deodara transpiration.•The canopy transpiration of C. deodara decreased substantially during extreme heat days.•We propose a new index to quantify the efficiency of transpirational cooling.
