Abstract
•LAS glass-ceramic can be field-assisted ion exchanged using solid Ag electrodes.•Ag penetration > 100μm can be achieved in 5 min applying 20 mA cm−2.•The Ag+→(Li+, Na+) induces a structural modification of the material.•Phase transitions, cell expansion, and macrostrain are observed after ion exchange.•Ion exchange improves the resistance to defect formation and the biocidal activity.
