•Elemental analysis was used to characterize grape varieties in a single vineyard.•Both grape variety and vintage affected grape mineral concentrations.•Japanese varieties had higher Ca, Sr, Ga, and Ba levels than European ones.•Mg, P, S, and Mn concentrations in grapes altered with vintage.•Elemental analysis will support to characterize Japanese grape varieties and vintage.
