•PSE induced the differentiation of PC12 cells, SH-SH5Y cells, and primary cultured neurons.•PSE activated the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and Akt.•PSE synergistically works with neurotrophic factors in inducing the neurite outgrowth.•Luteolin, eriodictyol and 5,7-dihydroxychromone account for the function of PSE.
