Abstract
•Metal-organic framework (MOF) showed low toxicity to bacteria only at high concentrations.•MOF-199 was more toxic to Escherichia coli than Staphylococcus aureus.•The toxicological mechanism of MOF-199 included the membrane damage and oxidative stress.•The toxicity was partially from the release of Cu2+ of MOF-199.
