Combined effects of rainfall and flow depth on the resistance characteristics of sheet flow on gentle slopes

•The resistance of sheet flow affected by rainfall and depth was studied in lab.•Resistance coefficients decreased with increasing flow depth without rainfall.•Rainfall increased sheet flow resistance at a low flow depth and energy.•The effect of rainfall on sheet flow resistance is obvious at low Reynolds number.•Resistance decreased with the increasing ratio of flow depth and raindrop size.
