A multiscale long short-term memory model with attention mechanism for improving monthly precipitation prediction

•MLSTM with attention mechanism is developed for improving monthly rainfall prediction.•Data decomposition, input selection and structure optimization are integrated to LSTM.•The forecasting performance is examined with 129 stations over Yangtze River basin.•Proposed MLSTM-AM improves monthly rainfall forecasting compared to reference models.
