•Forest disturbance by fire increased heat transfer to the snowpack from tree stems.•Fire-disturbed tree stems were higher than air temperature on 87% of days.•Air temperature was the main control on snowpack temperature around tree stems.•Snowpack within fire-affected forests is more responsive to air temperature change.
