Critical factors for the use of machine learning to predict lake surface water temperature

•Lake surface water temperature is simulated by means of machine learning models.•A physically based model is used to have full control of variables.•Nine machine learning algorithms are compared, and none of them clearly prevails.•Best predictors are air temperature and day of the year; others have minor effects.•Using forcing from previous days allows for considering the history of the system.
