Effects of bed roughness on a horseshoe vortex in overland water flowing past a cylinder

•Flow fields of overland flow in different bed roughnesses were measured using particle image velocimetry.•The effect of different bed roughness levels on the HV kinematic characteristics in overland water flowing past a cylinder was discussed.•The motion process of the HV was summarized as showing an increase in the bed roughness.
