•Hydroxyapatite has excellent biocompatibility and its properties can be modified by cationic or anionic substitution.•Magnesium can improve the proliferation of osteoblast.•Phospholipid-assisted synthesis process can increase the magnesium substitution amount in hydroxyapatite.•Phospholipid-assisted method can improve the regularity of crystal alignment, forming a human bone-liked structure.
