•Cu precursors affected the location of the Cu2+ ions in the Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts.•The Cu2+ ions located at six-member rings showed stronger charge offset.•CuO increased after hydrothermal treatment to promote the NH3-SCR reaction.•SCR mechanism changed for Fresh-II catalyst after hydrothermal treatment.
