Abstract
Heterogeneous catalysts have achieved tremendous breakthroughs for in-situ HDO of biomass in recent years. Comprehensive understanding of the structure-performance relationships towards heterogeneous catalysts is essential to guide the upgrading of biomass. In this paper, we summarized the characteristics of different types of hydrogen donors and discussed the significant role of the active sites during the activation of hydrogen donors, aiming at providing strong bases for construction of efficient catalysts. In-situ HDO with alcohols as hydrogen donor has attracted a lot of attentions due to its broad application prospects. Heterogeneous catalysts play the key role in achieving the cascade dehydrogenation-hydrogenation reactions. Focus on reviewing the state-of-the-art of heterogeneous catalysts (e.g., metal supported catalysts, metal–organic hybrids catalysts, single atom catalysts and metal oxides catalysts), and elaborate the roles of catalytic sites as well as the applicability towards different types of biomass derivations. Furthermore, several synthetic strategies (e.g., heteroatom doping, defect engineering, surface modification and encapsulation) are proposed to accurately construct efficient catalytic centers with high activity and stability. Finally, we provide some perspectives towards promoting heterogeneous catalysts in the field of biomass utilization.
