•This is the first stress reactivity study to measure sedentary behaviour with gold-standard inclinometry.•Sedentary behaviour is linked to larger psychobiological responses to psychological stress, independent of physical activity.•Exaggerated reactivity may mechanistically underpin links between sedentary behaviour and cardiovascular disease risk.
