•Selective COX-2 or sEH inhibitors did not potentiate caspase dependent apoptosis.•COX inhibition potentiated ER stress induced apoptosis.•sEH inhibition prevented enhanced apoptosis by COX inhibition during ER stress.•The effect of COX & sEH inhibitors on apoptosis varied with the apoptotic mechanism.
