•Numerical simulation of jet breakup using high-order MPS method.•Applicability and reliability of the method are validated by the comparison between the simulation results and reference experiments.•Molten corium jet breakup in sodium is studied, some eddies produced by RT instability and KH instability lead to jet breakup.
