•Post-stroke depression (PSD) is predicted by white matter hyperintensities (WMH).•PSD is predicted by stroke size volume, WMH, age and hypertension.•Right side infarct is associated with sadness and inability to feel.•Left side infarction is associated with lassitude and tension.•PSD is the consequence of chronic and acute inflammatory processes.
