•Fabrication of plastic nanotrenches using nanoimprint lithography technique.•The analysis of surface roughness and morphology were made using SEM and AFM.•The SERS activity of the 4 Ag films was assessed using crystal violet as analyte.•LOD of 10 pM was reached in case of the Ag film of 25 nm thickness on nanotrenches.
