•We tested whether 6- to 10-year-olds associate gender and race with power.•Children’s linking of same-race individuals with power decreased with age.•Boys but not girls consistently linked same-gendered individuals with power.•Boys and girls nevertheless exhibited a comparable drive to attain power.
