Abstract
Reliable clinical assessment of dental students is challenging. Longitudinal qualitative assessment of student progression and competency should allow for opportunities for identification of students achieving early competency as well as for those needing additional experience. Furthermore, ongoing assessment is critical to assure that students are maintaining required skills. The Daily Clinical Assessment (DCA) assesses students in five categories in both global patient management skills and discipline specific skills with a qualitative requirement of 80% Meeting Expectations. Students not meeting the 80% benchmark are required to have added experiences in the specific disciple. The DCA provided a way to ensure competency in students who are at varying levels of skills.
