•The impact of COVID-19 on Chinese commercial building was analyzed in depth.•Dalian was selected for the only city affected by pandemic lockdown five times.•Changes in energy consumption per unit area of commercial building was indicated.•The improvement of indoor thermal environment and air quality were suggested.
