•Thin (5 to 100 nm) tungsten (W) oxide films influence deuterium (D) release from W.•Oxide films act as both D reservoir and D transport barrier.•Above 475 K outgassing D chemically interacts with oxide film and forms heavy water.•Above 700 K D release dominated by heavy water.•For O/D ratio of greater than 5 to 10%, even natural W oxide films strongly affect D release.
