Energy-efficient automated vertical farms

•We introduce a new NP-complete problem arising from real-life operation of vertical farms.•We propose mixed-integer and constraint programming models for the problem.•We test families of valid inequalities to strengthen our formulations.•We validate our approach on both synthetic and real-life instances.•We make the solver and the instances available under an open-source license.
