Stepwise benchmarking for multiple criteria sorting

•We introduce a stepwise benchmarking model for multiple criteria sorting problems.•We construct plans for attaining a better class through gradual performance changes.•The development paths involve existing alternatives or fictive benchmarks.•We propose measures for assessing a balance of suggested performance modifications.•The framework is applied to a real problem of parametric evaluation of research units.
