•The effect of WC content on the bonding strength, residual stress, fracture toughness, compression resistance, bending strength, and fracture morphologies of the specimens was studied.•There are different optimal ranges in each performance.•Each performance has been greatly improved.•The coating with 20% WC has the best comprehensive properties.
