•Four stages of pyrite have been observed in the Pangjiahe gold deposit.•Gold and As (Sb, Cu, and Ag) display decoupled geochemistry in altered samples.•Arsenic, Sb, Cu, and Ag may be helpful to find distal anomaly related to gold mineralization.•The Devonian seafloor exhalation sequence was the possible source of gold.
