•No association between APOL1 and blood pressure was shown in African American mothers or children.•Mothers with the APOL1 high-risk genotype were more vulnerable to higher DBP when exposed to PM2.5.•Stronger associations of APOL1 risk variants with HBP were found in girls than in boys.
