•On average, cognitive performance of patients with prostate cancer improved during the first year of treatment.•Nearly half of the patients with cognitive impairment before treatment improved after 1 year.•Patients treated with ADT were more likely to present incident cognitive impairment at 1 year.•The COVID-19 pandemic may have worsened the effect of ADT in the cognitive performance of patients with prostate cancer.
