A deep generative approach for crash frequency model with heterogeneous imbalanced data

•This study attempts the excessive zero crash problem using a generative approach.•The proposed augmented variational autoencoder method is capable of synthesizing data of multiple distribution types.•The proposed method has better data generation performance than conventional generative approach.•More crash explanatory factors can be identified based on synthetic data using the proposed method than original data.
