Abstract
•We investigated whether attention is automatically engaged by semantically incongruent objects.•Scenes were presented centrally, while target letters peripherally.•Incongruent objects did not hold attention longer than congruent ones.•However, we did find a hold effect in a “positive control” condition, involving affective images.•Violation of semantic relations in real-world scenes does not automatically hold attention.
