Parental and own substance use disorder: The intersection of gender and early adversity

•Parental SUD is associated increased risk of own SUD for both men and women.•Parental SUD is associated with greater childhood adversity and SUD risk for men.•For men, the presence of grandparents is associated with higher SUD risk.•For women, early onset mood/anxiety disorder is associated with higher SUD risk.•For both genders, those who are African American have lower risk of SUD.
