•A double-layers buffer barrier with buffer-A and buffer-B was proposed.•Buffer-A is a mixture with higher heat conductivity closing to HLW canister.•Buffer-B is bentonite with lower hydraulic conductivity closing to rock.•Increasing thermal conductivity of buffer-A results in effectively reducing peak temperature.
