•Example of best-estimate comparison between APOLLO2.8 and MCNP6.1.•PWR Er-SHB FA with 235U over 10% and Er2O2 in all pins irradiated up to 120 GWd/MTU.•JEFF3.1.2 and JEFF3.2 used in MCNP6 as no xs library fully consistent with CEA2005v4.•Comparison made in terms of criticality and isotope concentration versus burnup.•Discrepancies between the codes mainly due to the different cross section libraries.•Discrepancies of the same order of magnitude as that of a PWR FA with 5% in 235U.
