Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis replicates in mouse bone marrow

•Mice were inoculated with two Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis strains.•Small footpad lesions, parasite persistence, and presence of the parasite in the viscera were observed for prolonged time periods.•L. (V.) braziliensis was detected in lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow of infected mice.•This is the first report of L. (V.) braziliensis in the bone marrow of infected mice.
