Longitudinal relations between gaming, physical activity, and athletic self-esteem

•Increased gaming predicted decreased athletic self-esteem.•Increased gaming predicted reduced MVPA (boys only).•Increased MVPA predicted decreased time spent gaming (boys only).•Increases in gaming at age 10 might exert long-term consequences for MVPA.•Increases in MVPA at age 10 might have long-term effects on reducing gaming.
