•We quantified the sensitivity of dead fuel moisture to forest structure effects on microclimate.•Forest structure effects on VPD and longwave radiation exerted strong control on fuel moisture.•Altered understorey VPD allowed for erratic fire conditions in summer.•Dead fuel moisture content is sensitive to changes in forest structure.
