•Numerous major genes related to anthocyanin biosynthesis have been identified in Solanaceous Fruit Vegetables.•Post-transcription / translation modification and epigenetics are important regulatory mechanisms of anthocyanin synthesis.•MYB-bHLH-WD complex is a node that links environmental factors and anthocyanin synthesis.•Some new quantitative trait locus related to anthocyanin synthesis have been mined recently.
