•Role of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in reducing subgingival oral yeasts colonization (OYC) in patients with peri-implant mucositis (PiM) was assessed•Peri-implant clinical parameters and OYC were assessed at baseline and after 3-months.•Patients in the test- and control groups underwent mechanical instrumentations with and without aPDT, respectively.•aPDT with MD is effective in reducing peri-implant soft tissue inflammation and OYC in PiM patients
