•Younger adults (aged 18–39) are a concerning group for the containment of COVID-19.•Best-Worst Scaling was used to examine COVID-19 related preferences in this group.•Focus on two domains of attributes for vaccination, and two for public health measures.•We examined preferences for physical distancing, proof of health, vaccine access, altruism motives.•Preferring proof of vaccination and altruistic motives predicted vaccine acceptance.
