Public health framing in local media coverage of crashes involving pedestrians or bicyclists in Hawai‘i, 2019: A content analysis

•This study analyzed the content of local news articles in Hawai‘i over one year.•Media reports typically focus on pedestrians and bicyclists over vehicle drivers.•Media reports of crashes involving pedestrians/bicyclists lacked public health framing.•Findings can inform local action to improve media coverage using a public health lens.•Other states/regions could replicate this study to benchmark local media coverage.
