•NO2 concentrations were 77.3% lower during the closure of WUH.•Steeper reduction in NO than in BTEX levels at SHA.•NO2 concentrations at WUH were dropped to near zero during airport closure.•Increase in O3 levels at both WUH and SHA due to reduced NOx emissions.
