•The fatigue failure mechanism of 2205 duplex stainless steel is clarified.•The austenite takes a dominant role in LCF regime while the ferrite takes a dominant role in HCF regime.•The evolutions of kernel average misorientation, grain size and textures are revealed.•The relationship of macroscopic fracture and microscopic deformation has been developed.
