•Species-specific leaf area index and basal area per hectare models were developed.•Fine-resolution optical Sentinel-2 imagery is effective for measuring these attributes.•Sentinel-1 SAR data did not contribute to the performance of the models.•Elevation is a significant site variables for predicting evaluated parameters.
